Our History

Established in 1975 through efforts of deaf consumers and local interpreters certified by the NationaI Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. DeafConnect of the Mid-South began as a private, non-profit interpreter referral agency, with funding provided by United Way of Memphis. Over time, the scope and vision of DeafConnect of the Mid-South evolved, and it now is a full-service agency.

Today, most of our financial resources - approximately 65 percent - comes through our own fund-raising efforts, activities and fees for services. The State of Tennessee, through the Tennessee Department of Human Services, Division of Rehabilitation Services, has consistently provided funding for DeafConnect of the Mid-South; however, the amount has varied.

We are very proud that 90 percent of our funding goes toward actual client services. That exceeds a recommended 60 percent set by the National Charities Information Bureau.
